One of the many characteristics of a gum abscess is increased swelling. Your  gums will appear red and will enlarge. This not only makes it difficult to eat but speak. Luckily there are a few tips that you can use to help ease this swelling.

Apply Clove Oil to the Area

You may include cloves in your teas or cooking but they are often used in dental care. Cloves are used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. The spice has the ability to offer pain relief and reduce inflammation including swelling. In order to use the power of cloves, apply a few drops of clove oil to one tablespoon of a carrier oil. This can be coconut oil or olive oil. Use a thin cloth to dip into the mixture and tap the cloth against your gums. Avoid applying any kind of pressure as this can cause more pain. Delicately hold the thin cloth against the gums for a few minutes, then repeat with another area of the cloth that is clean. Do not to rinse or drink anything for a few hours in order to give the clove oil a chance to work.

Create a Hot Compress for Yourself

You may be familiar with the use of hot compress in order to treat sprains and muscle injuries. The compress works well to ease inflammation and swelling during injury. It can be used effectively to curb your oral swelling. In order to create a hot compress, boil a pot of hot water on the stove. Allow the water to cool a bit, and soak a small towel in the water. Wring out any excess and apply the towel against the side of your face where the infection is. Instruct them to hold the compress there until it begins to cool. Then repeat the process. You can also use a microwave to heat up the towel if you happen to have one.
